The Big OZ Trip

The Trip

This is the story of our year-long Big Trip around Australia – August 2008 to August 2009

We have been in our house for just over 25 years and have been thinking of moving once the mortgage is completed. We fancy moving to Dorset or Somerset or around the Portsmouth/Southampton area. We were aiming at moving some time next year.

Then, a couple of months ago, Jeff said that rather than move when we sell up, we should take ourselves off to Australia, buy a motorhome and do “The Big One”!!! That is, join the Grey Nomads and travel around Australia for a year!! Followed by 3 or 4 months in New Zealand. We can get a year’s Visa for Oz, dunno about New Zealand, though, but hopefully it shouldn’t be a problem.

June Update

Well, here it is, getting towards the end of June, and we’re still in the UK.   We received our Visas ages ago and thought that we would be setting off at the end of this month.     We should have taken possession of the deeds to our house on or around 8 May.    But thanks to the inefficiency of our mortgage company, we’re still waiting!!!!    Hopefully this will be sorted out within a week or so and we can book our flight to Ozzieland.     We can also contact the local Letting Agents who will be taking care of our house and hopefully renting it to some nice considerate people whilst we’re away.

It looks as if the best place to start will be Sydney, we can spend a few days with my Aunt and Uncle before heading up to Newcastle which I understand is the hub of the motorhome world.    Hopefully if won’t take us too long to find just the right vehicle and then we can get under way.    We’ll head for Darwin, via Lightning Ridge so that we can ‘do’ Northern Australia before it gets too hot and wet.   Then on at a more leisurely pace down the west coast to Perth.    This is the Plan – whether we stick to it or not is another thing.   We don’t want to be held to any deadlines, just poodling along seeing what’s around the next bend.

I’ve been checking out loads of sites to see what sort of motorhomes are available and have come to the conclusion that a Nissan Civilian or Toyota Coaster would suit us very nicely thankyou.   Just need to find one without the permanent bed (we want to have two bench seats with a table in between that can be turned into a bed).

Stage 1 – 7 Sept

Well, folks, we’re here in soggy old NSW!!!!    At the moment we’re staying at the Newcastle Heights Motel in Charlestown, Newcastle, and it’s absolutely tipping it down – has been for the last 5 days.

We arrived last Friday after an exhausting flight – 2 babies who seemed to have some arrangement going – first one would start yelling, and then after it stopped, the other one would get going.   Our seats were sooo uncomfortable, and the guy in front of Jeff had what appeared to be a broken seat and was fidgeting the whole flight.   I don’t think we’ll be flying Emirates again once we return to the UK.

When we originally started to book our flight, back in July I asked the young lady at TravelBag for flights with an airline that allowed 2 bags per person.   She came up with Emirates and Air New Zealand – and recommended Emirates.   I checked the Emirates website, just to make sure and sure enough, it said 2 bags, 32kg each.   I thought at the time that this was remarkably generous, but there it was in black and white under “Baggage Allowance” on their website.   It also said 1 bag of 7kg as cabin baggage.    As our trip was for a year, I duly packed our bags with all the bits and pieces I thought we would need – craft stuff, fishing gear, clothes etc etc.   We wanted both our laptops and I had put them in one bag – totalling 6.8kg.   The afternoon before we were due to leave, I thought I would check to see if I would be allowed to take a handbag in addition.    I eventually got through to Emirates and spoke to a very pleasant lady who said that she was sorry, but the allowance was 1 bag of 7kg per passenger.

“Oh OK”, says me.   “Your Hold Baggage allowance is very generous, so we should manage alright.”

“I’m sorry, what do you mean?” said pleasant lady.    “Well, 2 bags of 32kg each” said I.   “Oh no – the allowance is 1 bag of 20Kg” she said.   Well I pointed out what it said on their website, but she insisted.   Anyway – I finally said that I thought the wording on their site was very misleading – apparently the greater baggage allowance was for flights to the Americas.

So there I was, the day before we were due to leave, trying to rearrange 4 bags into 2!!!!   Out went most of our clothes, shoes, the fishing gear, books, Jeff’s spare cord and rope etc.   We had to take most of our craft stuff with us as this would be difficult to buy in Oz, but clothes and shoes etc  could be easily replaced.    We had intended to have a nice relaxed afternoon, making a few final phone calls – HAH!!!

Thursday midday our neighbour, Pete, took us down to Heathrow in plenty of time for our flight at 10.15pm.   We like to get to the airport in plenty of time so that we can allow for any delays on the road – and as I’d booked in online we checked in our 2(!!) bags, and had a little wander around, a bite to eat and a sit down before boarding. Landing in Dubai The flight to Dubai was OK, but the Dubai to Sydney leg was not.   The seats were really uncomfortable and there were a couple of babies near us who seemed to take it in turns to bellow.

Anyway, we arrived safe and sound, got our car and headed to Aunties Jo’s.   All OK there, but she delayed us leaving (deliberately, we reckon <BG>) and we eventually left for Newcastle on the Tuesday – about midday ‘cos herself had to play tennis that morning!!!!!   On the previous couple of days we did check out a couple of dealers but all too expensive.    Anyway we got to Newcastle OK, found a motel and spent the Wednesday and Thursday looking for our motorhome.   Still no luck – all too expensive.   Friday Jeff went down to Sydney on the train to see what he could find at the Camper market in Kings Cross – they were all backpackers campers – all too small.  But he made some useful contacts.   I spent a lovely day with my Cavalier-owning mate, Julie, who lives nearby.    Yup – I’ve had my first OzCavalier-fix and found a new friend – a sweet little Black and Tan friend!!!

It’s been absolutely chucking it down for the last five days and I’m getting really cheesed off with it.   To cap it all, somehow Jeff accidently left the passenger window half open and the car was facing just the right direction for the rain to flood my seat and create a paddling pool in the footwell.   Loads of stuff got soaked including (we thought) our TomTom!!!!   It wouldn’t work afterwards, but we have just discovered that the ciggy lighter in the replacement car is buggered.   Our original car was not really usable and luckily right next door to our motel was the Newcastle office of our hire company.   So they swopped our Mitsubishi for a Ford – and hopefully we won’t lose our deposit.

Tomorrow we will be seeing a private sale Toyota Coaster motorhome which looks promising – then hopefully we can get under way once all the formalities have been sorted.

Right – that’s yer lot for now.

Stage 2 – 8 Sept

Well the Coaster I mentioned yesterday has been viewed and claimed.    We just have to sort out the paperwork and get a cheque from the bank – and she’s ours.   We’re christening her Betty in honour of my late stepmum.

And at last it’s stopped raining and the sun’s been shining.

Stage 2b – 9 Sept

Jeff took the hire car back this afternoon, and we have stowed our stuff in our new Toyota Coaster.    We’ll stay at our motel in Parramatta tonight – then head up the coast to Newcastle before going inland towards Lightning Ridge.    We’ll call into Jo and Roy’s in Mt Colah on the way and then the Caravanning and Motorhome Club HQ northwest of Newcastle to complete the paperwork on the Coaster.

And then our Big Trip can finally begin.

Stage 3 – Underway at last!!!

FRIDAY 12 September

We are now at the Lightning Ridge Hotel/Motel/Caravan Park.   Arrived about 3:15pm and managed to book the second to last available place.   Apparently there’s a whole gang of Morris Minor enthusiasts here, taking up half the places.

Last night we stayed at the Coonamble Riverside Caravan Park – a council-owned site, run by Pat and his missus, a lovely couple who will be heading out in a clockwise direction to do their own Big Trip after spending a couple of months with their family in Dubbo.   Their set-up is quite something.   A huge blue-painted  coach, complete with 2 trailers!!!  One housing a very tasty looking trike.    They call their rig NIKOOL TUOBA 2 (work it out!!!)    We did yet more shopping – we keep finding more things that we need.   Hopefully, with some more shopping when we got to L Ridge, we have now all we need – Oh, except for a decent near-side wing mirror for Betty – we should be getting that tomorrow.   The road to Coonamble had seemed very rough, and Jeff thought it would be a good idea to have the tyres checked for balance as there seemed to be more wheel-wobble than there should have been.   Flippin’ good job he did.   The tread on one of the front tyres had actually separated and needed replacing, so Jeff got both front tyres replaced.

The previous night we stayed at a very small roadside caravan park in Merriwa.   Met a lovely couple called Bev and John who have said that they will try to get over to Hobart for the Wooden Boat Show in February.

We’ve seen a fair bit of wildlife on the road – unfortunately loads of dead kangaroos and a few sheep too.   We spotted a good sized group of emus (about a dozen), lots of birds – galahs, sulphur-crested cockatoos, kookaburras, crested pigeons, crows or ravens (not sure which), magpies, butcher birds.   I caught a very brief glimpse of what I think was a small goanna and a bit later a tiny lizard.    We’ve been looking out for live ‘roos, but ain’t seen one yet.   As we go northward the weather gets better, it’s very warm now, which is great after the several days of rain in Sydney and Newcastle.   The wattle growing alongside the roads is really beautiful – trees and bushes covered in yellow blooms.   Talking of yellow – saw several fields of oilseed rape, the flippin’ stuff gets everywhere.
